Great Recipes for your pet!

Garlic and Parsley Biscuits

2 cups white or whole-wheat flour

1/4 cup corn meal

1 tsp. sugar

1 T. shortening

2 tsp. garlic powder

1 T. parsley flskes

1 cup approx. water

Mix dry ingredients in a mixing bowl.  Add shortening and mix well with a fork.  Add enough water (about 1 cup) to make a stiff dough.  Roll dough with rolling pin until it is about 1/4 inch thick.  Cut into shapes with cookie cutters.  Place on ungreased cookie sheet and bake for 50 minutes to 1 hour at 300 degrees until cookies are hard.  Let cool for several hours before storing.  These treats are healthy for your dog and they really like them.

 Breed Spotlight

Papillon

This dwarf spaniel has a two to three colored coat that is very silky, has erect ears that resemble the spread wings of a butterfly.  The name Papillon is the French word for fluttering insect.  The Papillon's coat makes this breed for either warm or cold climates.  Its small head carries a slightly rounded skull with a distinct stop.  The thin, tapering muzzle ends at a small, round, black nose.  Ears are set wide and back, drop or erect, always large with rounded tips, and the dark eyes are of medium size, never pop or bulging.  Neck has medium length.

The body is a little on the long side, with sloping shoulders, chest of medium depth, and fine-boned forelegs with thin, elongated feet.  The topline is level over a good rib cage, strong hindquarters, clear tuck-up, and strong angulation.

The coat is long, silky, straight, and aboundant, with feathering and the hair is short on skull and muzzle.  A proper coat carries white with patches of another color or it can be tricolor (white, black or tan).  A white blaze is very desirable.

The Papillon should stand 8 to 11 inches and weigh about 10 pounds.

Fun With Your Pet

Training your pet can be fun and very rewarding.  A great feeling of pride comes over you your pet is well behaved and can captivate an audience with a few tricks.  An added reward for you is the bond that is created by the training - love, understanding and trust.

One simple trick that can get you started is Turn Around.

Start by having your dog stand up facing you.  Have a treat in your hand. You stand still and say, "Turn Around".  Take the treat and lead the dog in a circle so the dog is turing around in front of you.  When the dog has made a complete circle reward the dog with the treat and of course,  "GOOD DOG!"

Pet Poetry

A Faithful Dog

A Faithful dog will play with you

And laugh with you -- or cry.

He'll gladly starve to stay with you

Nor ever reason why.

And when you're feeling our of sorts

Somehow he'll understand.

He'll watch you with his shinng eyes

And try to lick your hand.

His blind, implicit faith in you

Is matched by his great love--

The kind that all of us should have

In the Master, up above.

When everything is said and done,

I guess this isn't off...

For when you spell 'Dog ' backwards,

You get the name of God.
